Brooklyn, New York
Everyone knows New Utrecht High School in the Bensonhurst section of western Brooklyn: it is the location of “Welcome Back, Kotter.” TV reality aside, the public school, built in 1922-1923 as two parts - a classroom building and a gym – today has 3200 students, which stretches the facility to its limits. The NYC School Construction Authority asked Helpern Architects to create new classrooms and a significantly larger cafeteria to replace the existing refectory and kitchen. Building systems were modernized including the addition of air-conditioning to public spaces.
