A new building, the 35,000-sf Academic Center is one of several major additions and changes derived from the Helpern Architects’ master plan for the landlocked “small college of big dreams.” The Center adjoins and shares vertical circulation with St. Francis’ main building. Built to high standards of sustainability, the Center houses 14 smart classrooms, a 3-story library, a 90-seat theater/lecture hall, the communications arts department, a cyber lounge, and academic offices. Restoration of the contiguous older building was done at the same time. The new rooftop gymnasium, which St. Francis uses for functions as well, was Helpern’s first addition.
