New York, New York
Helpern Architects rescued the long-ago clubhouse at 30 West 44th Street from near-dereliction, enabling it to become a social as well as architectural success. Helpern entirely created the club’s interiors – none of the period woodwork or lighting, for instance, is “original” – and added two stories to the structure for a gym and equipment. The project, which took seven years to achieve, earned a New York Preservation Award from the Municipal Art Society.
